Weekend Writing Warriors #44


Hi Everyone and welcome to another eight sentences!
This week, and the weeks running up to Christmas, I will be sharing sentences from my Christmas Anthology 'Christmas Delights'

My eight this week are the opening lines from one of the five stories 'The Christmas Guest'

My Eight

It was mid December and Leanne was growing tired of all the happy faces surrounding her. Everyone except her, it seemed, was full of Christmas spirit. At work the Christmas tree had been up for over a month, with its silly fake presents sitting untidily beneath it. Leanne still had two more weeks to work until she could take leave and shut herself away in her small apartment waiting for the fuss to die down.
Of course she hadn’t always felt like this. Last year for example had been a very Happy Christmas. She smiled to herself as she remembered staying in bed for two whole days with a third year student she’d met in a wine bar.
Monday morning reality broke into her daydream as the phone on her maple desk rang loudly.

    Actually, the way Christmas gets treated around here, I can kind of sympathize with her desire to get away from it! Hmm, two whole days with a guy picked up in a bar? wow ;-)

    I think a lot of people feel that way about the holidays, so I can totally sympathize with her. I wonder if anything will happen to brighten this holiday for her!

    I love Christmas but this time of year, but since I think people start celebrating way to early I can relate to the way your character feels. Great snippet!

    I loved the part about the fake presents arranged "untidily" beneath the tree. I remember working in a corporate setting and staring at the very same thing, having similar feelings. You've established Leanne as a very sympathetic character. I hope she finds her new beau soon. Really great eight!

    No, it's not even Thanksgiving yet! It's not time for Christmas! This is ignoring the fact that holiday items have been in stores since before Halloween... :(

    Nice snippet! I can feel her frustration at the decorations really clearly, even if I don't know why she hates the season yet. Intriguing...
